3D render of a ceramic tile

Capturing realism.

We previously featured a lab post showing our end to end process that captures products for use in 3D rendering, embedded 3D web pages and interactive tools. A tiling client approached us to learn more and find out how the capture process might work capturing the surface textures and geometry of a ceramic tile.

Surface details.

A tile incorporating metallic flakes and a textured coating was selected to test how the photogrammetry process would manage the glazed ceramic surface and reflectance.

The photogrammetry process produced excellent results. Here our artists have carefully adjusted the material properties to match the real life tile. We've rendered examples showing the detail the cameras were able to pick up, along with an animation to better exhibit the reflective flakes and glazed surface.

Embedded interactivity.

Once the materials have been adjusted our artists can also further optimise the geometry, creating lower resolution files for use in webpages with embedded interactive viewers. WebGL technology also facilitates augmented reality on compatible mobile devices, without the need for any additional apps or downloads.

This link works on mobile and desktop, but a mobile device will be needed to experience the augmented reality mode.
